Gazette No. 38 — Notice re 1908 International Boundary Treaty

Be it known and placed on record: That the Secretariat formally records the application of the 1908 International Boundary Treaty framework to the assertion of the international character of the Haldimand Proclamation of 1784 as a Crown-to-Nation instrument. The 1908 International Boundary Treaty (between the United Kingdom and the United States) was made at a time when the international character of Crown-Indigenous covenants was recognized in diplomatic practice. The Haldimand Proclamation was made in 1784 as a diplomatic instrument in the context of the restructuring of territorial and national relations following the American Revolutionary War. Its international character is confirmed by this context and by the 1897 Settled Accounts Arbitration.
